Towards Integrated Digital Twins for Industrial Products: Case Study on an Overhead Crane

Industrial Internet of Things practitioners are adopting the concept digital twins at an accelerating pace. The features range from simulation and analysis to real-time sensor data system integration. Implementation examples modeling-oriented becoming commonplace in academic literature, but information management-focused that combine multiple systems scarce. This study presents, analyzes, draws recommendations building a multi-component twin as industry-university collaboration project related smaller works. objective studied was create prototype implementation industrial for overhead crane called “Ilmatar”, serving machine designers maintainers their daily tasks. Additionally, cases focus on enhancing operation. paper describes two tools, three frameworks, eight proof-of-concept prototypes development. experiences show good-quality Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) significant enablers development twins. Hence, we recommend traditional companies start API portfolios. application led discovery novel API-based business network framework helps organize supply chains.
